What Is Mastering?
Mastering is the final step of the recording process, where each track is prepared and thoroughly checked until it is ready to be released to the public. Common tasks undertaken during the mastering stage include:
- Raising the overall level and perceived loudness of the track.
- Removing clicks, pops & other sonic defects.
- Achieving great reproduction across different sound systems.
- Fading in and out.
- Adding ISRC codes for CD releases.
- Compressing, EQ’ing and Processing to create a ‘bigger’ sound.
Why use a Professional Mastering Engineer?
Mastering is a very misunderstood technique within the Music Industry, where many refer to it as a ‘Dark Art’. This is partly due to the processing, which requires an extremely critical monitoring environment that can give an accurate representation of a piece of audio.
Most bedroom studios simply cannot reproduce the extremely delicate steps undertaken during mastering. This can often lead to the Mastering Engineer over-compensating any processing involved, or even having to guess what they are doing.
Here at DUBLAW HQ, we are proud to work in a brutally honest environment, offering professional monitors, AD/DA converters and acoustic treatment. All of which lends itself to creating precise masters that you can be sure to play effectively on any sound system.
